When to Go

Jinotega has a highland climate that is significantly cooler and wetter than the Nicaraguan lowlands. Temperatures typically range from 15°C to 25°C year-round, with nights that can be cool even in the dry season.

Dry season (December–April) is the most comfortable time to visit, with clear skies and good visibility over the mountains. This is also coffee harvest season (November–February), when the fincas are busy and tours are at their most interesting. Nights can be cold — bring a layer.

Rainy season (May–November) brings afternoon downpours and persistent mist over the cloud forests. Hiking is possible but the trails are wet and slippery; birding can actually be better as many species are more active in the wet season. July and August see a brief dry spell (canícula) that makes for a secondary good-weather window.

The city rarely gets overcrowded at any time of year — it is primarily a working regional centre rather than a tourist destination.
