Jinotega sits at nearly 1,000 metres in the northern Nicaraguan highlands, ringed by mountains that rise to 1,500 metres and kept cool by altitude — a welcome contrast to the sweltering lowlands. Known as the "City of Mists" for the clouds that roll through its valleys, it is the heart of Nicaragua's coffee country and a base for exploring some of the most dramatic highland scenery in Central America.
The town itself is small and unhurried, centred on the Cathedral of San Juan and a grid of streets where the pace of life is distinctly slower than Managua. The Mercado Municipal is the social hub, worth a morning visit for the highland produce and cheap breakfasts. The surrounding countryside is the real draw: coffee fincas climb the hillsides, Lake Apanás shimmers to the north, and the Cerro Datanlí-El Diablo Nature Reserve harbours cloud forest and the resplendent quetzal. You can reach Jinotega in about three hours by express bus from Managua's Mercado Mayoreo, or in an hour from Matagalpa along a road with spectacular views over the valleys and mountains of the northern sierras.
