Jinotega is accessible by road from Managua and Matagalpa. There is no airport.
From Managua: Express buses run from Managua's Mercado Mayoreo terminal to Jinotega several times daily. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and passes through Matagalpa. Ordinary buses take longer. The road climbs from the lowlands into the highlands and the views in the final hour are excellent.
From Matagalpa: Jinotega is about 1 hour from Matagalpa by bus or taxi. The road between the two cities is one of the most scenic highland drives in Nicaragua, following the mountain valleys with views down toward the Pacific coast on clear days. Buses run frequently throughout the day.
By taxi: Shared taxis (colectivos) are cheaper than private taxis and depart when full from the main terminals. Private taxis can be hired for the full route from Managua for around USD 40–60.
