Galería Códice is Managua's longest-running commercial art gallery, established in the 1990s and operating from a house in the Altamira neighbourhood. The gallery represents contemporary Nicaraguan painters, sculptors, and printmakers, and has been an important platform for Nicaraguan visual art through several decades of political and economic turbulence.
The exhibition programme changes regularly; visiting is worth doing if you have an interest in Central American art, or simply as a way of understanding what Nicaraguan artists are thinking about. The staff are knowledgeable and the low-pressure commercial atmosphere means you can browse without being pushed toward a sale. Managua's art scene is smaller than you might expect for a capital city, but Códice has done a lot to sustain it.
