Day Trips

The Caribbean coast east of Colón holds the most rewarding day excursion in the province. Portobelo, about an hour's drive, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a crumbling colonial port that was once Spain's main Atlantic treasure harbour. Its ruins include three substantial forts, a customs house, and the Black Christ church that draws pilgrims from across Panama. The town is small and quiet, set in a beautiful bay ringed by hills, and merits at least a half-day. Beyond Portobelo, the coast road passes beaches and dive sites in Portobelo National Park.
