When to Go

The Caribbean coast of Panama is wetter than the Pacific side and has no true dry season. Rain falls year-round, with heaviest falls between July and December. Even in the drier months of February to April, showers are common. Temperatures stay warm and humid throughout the year, hovering around 26–30°C. Visiting during the drier period makes outdoor sites like Fort San Lorenzo and Portobelo more comfortable, but the landscape is always green and the canal operates regardless of weather. The Black Christ festival in Portobelo on 21 October draws enormous crowds and is worth seeing if you can handle the logistics — book accommodation well in advance.
