Within Colón, taxis are the practical choice for getting between the bus terminal, the port, and the Zona Libre. Walking around the city centre requires caution — street crime is a genuine concern, and travellers should avoid wandering unfamiliar streets after dark or with visible valuables. Ask your hotel or hostel for current advice on which areas are safe.
For the main sights outside the city, a rental car or hired taxi gives the most flexibility. The Gatún Locks are about 20 minutes by road. Fort San Lorenzo is around 40 minutes via the former Canal Zone road — the route requires passing through a checkpoint, so carry your passport. Portobelo is about an hour east on the Caribbean coastal road. Mini-buses and collectivos run along the coast road to Portobelo from the Colón bus terminal for those without a vehicle.
