The largest national park in Central America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering 5,790 square kilometres of tropical forest, swamp, rocky coasts, mangroves, and high cloud forest on the Colombian border. More than 900 bird species have been recorded here, including the harpy eagle. Two indigenous groups — the Emberá-Wounaan and the Guna — live within the park and can be visited by canoe from La Palma or Metetí. Access is by small aircraft or boat; there are no roads. Pirre Station, reached by a muddy but rewarding hike, has waterfalls and a cloud forest.
