There are no paved roads through the Darién Gap itself. Metetí is the last town reachable by road from Panama City, and Yaviza — further east — can be reached in a 4WD in dry conditions. Beyond Yaviza, everything moves by canoe or on foot. Small aircraft serve La Palma, the provincial capital, and the villages of the interior. If crossing to Colombia, the sea route via water taxi from Puerto Obaldía or by sailboat from Colón is safer and more reliable than the overland route.
