La Concha Resort

La Concha is one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings on the Caribbean coast. Built in 1958 and designed to evoke the curved form of a conch shell, it represents the high point of mid-century tropical Modernism — the style that briefly flourished in Puerto Rico during the postwar tourism boom before international chains arrived with their standardized boxes. The building was derelict for years before restoration and reopening; it now operates as a resort hotel.

Even if you're not staying here, the exterior is worth pausing at. The curving concrete shell of the main structure and the kidney-shaped pool visible from the beach represent a moment when architects took the Caribbean seriously as a design context rather than just a backdrop. Walk around the beach-side perimeter in the morning before the crowds arrive. Inside, the lobby retains the open tropical feel of the original — no sealed corridors, just covered outdoor space flowing into the building. One of the most photogenic structures in Condado.
