Condado

San Juan beachfront neighbourhood of high-rise hotels, Ashford Avenue restaurants, and Atlantic surf.

Condado is San Juan's glitzy beachfront neighborhood, a strip of high-rise hotels, condominiums, and restaurants lining Ashford Avenue between the Condado Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. It occupies a narrow peninsula that was developed in the early 20th century as Puerto Rico's answer to Miami Beach, and it still plays that role -- this is where San Juan goes to see and be seen, with upscale shopping, rooftop bars, and a beach scene that runs from morning joggers to late-night cocktails.

The beach itself is a good stretch of sand with reliable waves, though the currents can be strong and the lifeguard coverage is not always consistent. The lagoon side is calmer, popular with paddleboarders and kayakers, and the Paseo del Condado boardwalk connects the beach to the lagoon with a pleasant walking path. Condado is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Juan, and you can easily reach Old San Juan by bus or a long waterfront walk through the Puerta de Tierra district.

The dining scene is one of Condado's strongest suits. Ashford Avenue and the surrounding streets have everything from high-end restaurants with creative Puerto Rican cuisine to casual spots serving mofongo and fresh seafood. The nightlife is lively, particularly on weekends, with hotel bars, cocktail lounges, and clubs that keep going well past midnight. Condado is also the center of San Juan's LGBTQ scene, with a welcoming atmosphere and several gay-friendly venues.

If you want beach, restaurants, and nightlife within walking distance and do not mind paying San Juan's highest prices, Condado is the place to stay. It is polished and commercial, and some will find it lacks the character of Old San Juan or the local flavor of Santurce next door. But it is convenient, safe, and delivers a reliably good time. The hotels range from boutique properties to large chains, and vacation rentals are plentiful.
