Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center

The Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center — known locally as Bellas Artes — is San Juan's main performance venue, a short walk south from Condado through the Santurce neighborhood. The complex contains three theatres of different scales, the largest of which seats over 1,800 people and has strong enough acoustics to host the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra properly. The building dates from the 1980s and is functional rather than beautiful, but the programming is the point.

The Symphony performs here through the regular season, and the international touring program brings opera, classical recitals, ballet, and contemporary dance companies. Spanish-language theatre productions also appear regularly. A performance at Bellas Artes is one of the better arguments for spending an evening in Condado rather than in the beach bars — check the online schedule before you arrive and book in advance if anything looks appealing. The venue is a 15-minute walk from the main hotel strip along Avenida Ponce de León, passing through a stretch of Santurce that has become a center of Puerto Rico's contemporary arts scene.
