Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary

The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary in the north of the island is a small, lovingly run rescue and breeding centre for hawksbill turtles — one of the world's most endangered sea-turtle species. Hatchlings are raised in tanks for three to five years until they reach a size that gives them a real chance of survival, and then released into the sea off Bequia's reefs.

A visit takes 30 minutes and starts with a tour from one of the volunteers, who explain the conservation work and walk you through the tanks of turtles of all sizes. Donations support the project. The drive to the north of the island past Spring Bay is itself worth doing — open countryside, ocean views, almost no traffic.

A story
The sanctuary was started in 1995 by Orton 'Brother' King, a former diver and fisherman who had grown alarmed at the steep decline in hawksbill numbers around Bequia. He raised the first turtles in his back garden. By the time he died in 2019 he had released more than 1,000 hatchlings back to sea.
