Kingstown is the capital and the only real town on St Vincent — a tight grid of two- and three-storey buildings wedged between a steep ridge and a deep harbour. The population is barely 20,000, but on a weekday morning the streets are busy with commerce: market vendors, fishermen unloading at Little Tokyo, schoolchildren in colour-coded uniforms, vans loading for the country routes.
Most of what you'd want to see fits in a short walk. The covered market sits at the centre, the Anglican cathedral and the Catholic cathedral are within two blocks of each other on Grenville Street, and the waterfront has the cruise terminal at one end and the inter-island ferry dock at the other. Hire a taxi for the climb up to Fort Charlotte — at 600 feet above the harbour the view back over town and out to Bequia is the best in St Vincent. The Botanical Garden is a 15-minute walk north of the centre and worth at least an hour.
