Queen's Park Savannah

Vast city oval ringed by grand colonial mansions and evening food stalls

The Savannah is a 32-hectare oval green space at the north end of the city — one of the largest roundabouts in the world, technically, though nobody calls it that. It is the true heart of Port of Spain's public life: joggers and walkers circle its perimeter at dawn, cricketers take over the grass on weekends, and in the evenings a row of food stalls along the southern edge sell corn soup, oysters, and local snacks to a steady crowd.

The northern edge of the Savannah is framed by the Magnificent Seven — seven grand colonial-era mansions built in the early twentieth century, ranging from a Scottish castle to a Baroque French chateau to a Moorish-inspired confection. They are strange and extravagant and wonderful.
