Arnos Vale is a small cove on the leeward (Caribbean) coast between Plymouth and Castara, notable for combining a decent beach with excellent birding. The ruined stonework of an old sugar estate overlooks the bay, and the wooded hillsides around the cove attract hummingbirds, mot-mots, and jacamars. A small hotel and restaurant operates at the property, serving food and cold drinks to day visitors.
The beach itself is modest — narrow and pebbly in places — but the water is calm and clear, with good snorkelling along the rocks at the southern end of the cove. The setting is more private than Crown Point beaches, and the birding around the estate ruins can be productive in the early morning before the heat builds. It's a good stop on a tour of the western coast, combining with Plymouth (with its Mystery Tombstone) and Castara further along the Northside Road.
