A hands-on science museum in a renovated downtown department store building, with an IMAX dome theater and a substantial freshwater aquarium featuring fish from Alabama's rivers and streams. Alabama has more freshwater fish species than any other state of comparable size, and the aquarium makes the case for why that biodiversity matters.
Good for families with children, but the IMAX screenings attract all ages. The building's bones are worth a look on their own — it is one of the more elegant adaptive reuse projects in Birmingham's downtown. Located on 19th Street near the heart of downtown, a short walk from Railroad Park and the Civil Rights District.
