Dothan

Wiregrass city with peanut culture, agricultural history, downtown murals, and a few solid museums.

North America > United States > Alabama > Dothan

Dothan is the main city of Alabama's Wiregrass, a southeast corner of the state tied to peanuts, farms, highways, and the Florida Panhandle route. It is not a beautiful city in the usual travel-guide sense, and much of it feels like a regional service hub, but it has enough local identity to reward a spare day if you are already nearby.

The peanut theme is real rather than just a slogan. Dothan calls itself the Peanut Capital of the World, hosts the National Peanut Festival, and scatters painted peanut sculptures around town. More importantly, Landmark Park gives that agricultural story substance with a living-history farm, boardwalk, and museum.

Downtown adds a different layer: the Wiregrass Museum of Art, historic Dothan Opera House, murals, and the tiny oddity of the World's Smallest City Block. Dothan just clears the World66 bar because the package is specific. Come for the Wiregrass story, not for generic city sightseeing.

When to Go

Dothan is most distinctive during the National Peanut Festival in November, when the city's agricultural identity becomes a full local event. Summers are hot and humid, so outdoor stops like Landmark Park and the botanical gardens are better early in the day.
