Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

A 200-acre wildlife rescue centre at the head of Turnagain Arm, twenty minutes south of Girdwood. The centre takes in injured and orphaned Alaskan animals and rehabilitates or houses them in large enclosures designed to feel like genuine habitat. Bears, moose, wolves, lynx, caribou, bald eagles, musk oxen and the small captive wood bison herd that AWCC bred for reintroduction into the Innoko Wildlife Refuge.

It is the most reliable place in southcentral Alaska to see grizzly and black bears at close range. A drive-through loop lets you stay in the car or get out at the larger enclosures. Allow two hours.
