Humphreys Peak

Humphreys Peak is the highest summit in Arizona and the ultimate hiking objective from Flagstaff. The standard route from the Arizona Snowbowl is about 15 kilometres return with 1,100 metres of elevation gain, rated strenuous but straightforward for fit hikers. The trail climbs through aspen and spruce forest, crosses a saddle at the treeline, and then follows an exposed ridge to the summit.

The Peaks are sacred to multiple Native American tribes and the summit itself sits on Navajo Nation land — hikers should treat it with respect. The alpine zone above treeline is fragile; stay on the trail. Snow closes the upper route for much of the year and afternoon thunderstorms are a serious hazard in summer — start early and plan to be off the exposed ridge by noon.

A story
At 3,851 metres, Humphreys Peak is the highest point in Arizona and the only peak in the state that qualifies as an ultra-prominent summit. On a clear day from the top you can see the Grand Canyon to the north, the Mogollon Rim to the south, and the Colorado Plateau stretching in every direction — essentially the entire northern half of Arizona.
