Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Cinder-cone volcanic landscape north of Flagstaff with lava flows and short desert trails.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument protects a young volcanic landscape of black cinders, lava fields, and ponderosa pine about half an hour north of Flagstaff. The cone last erupted around the 11th century, leaving a raw-looking terrain that still feels abrupt beside the softer forests of the Colorado Plateau.

The monument is easy to visit on the loop road that continues toward Wupatki. Short trails give you enough time on the lava and cinder slopes to understand the place without turning it into a major expedition; bring water and sun protection, because the dark ground makes the heat feel sharper.
