The Museum of Northern Arizona, set in a handsome stone building north of downtown on the road toward Humphreys Peak, is one of the finest regional natural history and anthropology museums in the American West. Its permanent collections cover geology, biology, and the indigenous cultures of the Colorado Plateau — Hopi, Navajo, Pai, and Zuni — with genuine depth and care.
The Hopi and Navajo galleries are particularly strong, with historic and contemporary art displayed alongside context about ceremonial life, land rights, and ongoing cultural practice. The museum has maintained long relationships with Native communities in the region and it shows in the quality and sensitivity of the interpretation. The surrounding grounds are landscaped with native plants and worth wandering.
