Mule rides are one of the Grand Canyon's oldest visitor traditions, and they still make sense here in a way they would not in many national parks. The animals are sure-footed, the routes are controlled, and the slow pace gives you time to read the canyon walls rather than just stare down at the next switchback.
South Rim rides are the classic choice, with trips that may descend from the Bright Angel Trail area toward Havasupai Gardens depending on the current programme. North Rim rides are shorter and more seasonal. Book well ahead, read the weight and fitness rules carefully, and do not assume this is an easy substitute for hiking: sitting a mule on narrow canyon trails takes its own kind of nerve.
