Devil's Kitchen Sinkhole

Devil's Kitchen is a large natural sinkhole in the red rock terrain north of central Sedona, accessible via the Soldier Pass Trail. The hole — roughly 60 feet in diameter and dropping steeply into darkness — appeared dramatically in 1880 when the roof of an underground cavern collapsed overnight. The scale of it, sitting quietly in the desert landscape, is genuinely startling.

The Soldier Pass Trail that passes the sinkhole is one of Sedona's better hikes, passing through relatively quiet terrain (compared to the Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock areas) and taking in a series of interesting geological features including Seven Sacred Pools — a series of natural rock basins that hold water after rain. The full trail is about 4 miles round trip.

A story
In January 1880, settlers reported hearing a tremendous crash in the night. By morning, a hole 60 feet wide and 50 feet deep had appeared in the earth. The sinkhole has been slowly growing ever since. It collapsed again significantly in 1988, and geologists believe there is an extensive cave system beneath the surface that continues to undermine the ground.
