Bachman-Wilson House

Relocated from New Jersey to the Crystal Bridges grounds in 2015, this 1954 Frank Lloyd Wright house is open for timed tours. It is smaller than most people expect — that is the point of the Usonian concept — and the interior organisation, with its cantilevered carport and long horizontal lines opening to a garden, rewards close attention. Tours run daily; booking in advance is strongly recommended as capacity is limited.

A story
The Bachman-Wilson House is a 1954 Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home, originally built in New Jersey and moved to the Crystal Bridges grounds in 2015 when its New Jersey site became vulnerable to flooding. Wright designed Usonian houses as affordable, organically designed homes for middle-class Americans — low-slung, opening to the landscape, using natural materials. This example was commissioned by Abraham and Gloria Bachman, is built almost entirely of cypress and brick, and demonstrates Wright's conviction that modest-income families deserved architecture as considered as any mansion.
