Benton County Courthouse

The 1928 courthouse sits at the centre of Bentonville's main square, a solid brick and stone classical building that anchors the downtown. It is in active use as a county courthouse and is not generally open to visitors, but the exterior and square surroundings are worth a look as part of a walk around the central district.

A story
The Benton County Courthouse was built in 1928 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It dominates the town square with a classical revival facade of brick and stone that was typical of courthouse architecture in the prosperous 1920s American South. During the Civil War, Bentonville changed hands multiple times between Union and Confederate forces — the courthouse square was the centre of the town's wartime disruptions, and the area saw skirmishes in 1862 and again in 1864.
