Doe's Eat Place

Doe's Eat Place is a Little Rock institution that looks nothing like what it is. The original location — a converted grocery in a working-class neighbourhood — has been serving enormous tamales and massive steaks since 1941. The atmosphere is deliberately rough: you sit in the kitchen, the steaks arrive on butcher paper, and the menu is a few items repeated at volume.

The Delta tamales are the reason to come, and they are genuinely excellent — a distinction from any other tamale tradition, wrapped in cornhusk and made from a coarse masa with a beef filling. The steaks are huge and well-cooked if you want to spend more. 1023 W. Markham St.
