Springdale

Ozark city shaped by poultry industry, Latino food streets, and northwest Arkansas baseball culture.

Springdale is the fourth-largest city in Arkansas, located in the Ozark Mountains in the northwest corner of the state. It is the headquarters of Tyson Foods and often called the chicken capital of the world — the poultry industry dominates the local economy and has drawn a large Latino immigrant community, which in turn has given Springdale some of the best Mexican and Central American food in the region. The Emma Avenue Latin food scene is a genuine revelation: pupuserias, taquerias, and tamale shops that would be unremarkable in Los Angeles but are extraordinary in the Ozarks.

The town is part of the rapidly growing Northwest Arkansas metro area, alongside Fayetteville, Rogers, and Bentonville. The Arts Center of the Ozarks hosts theater and gallery exhibitions, and the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History is a well-curated small museum covering the region's frontier and agricultural past. The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad runs scenic excursion trains through the Ozark countryside — the route through the Boston Mountains is particularly beautiful in autumn.

The surrounding Ozarks countryside is the real draw. The Razorback Regional Greenway, a 36-mile paved trail, connects Springdale to Fayetteville and Bentonville and is excellent for cycling. Beaver Lake, about 30 minutes east, has swimming, fishing, and kayaking. The area's mountain biking trails, particularly those in the Slaughter Pen and Hobbs State Park systems nearby, are considered among the best in the country.
