Laughlin

Colorado River resort town with desert trails, petroglyphs, and dam-country scenery.

Laughlin sits at Nevada's far southern tip, where the Colorado River bends below Davis Dam and Arizona lies just across the water. It is a casino resort town, and there is no point pretending otherwise, but the useful reason to stop here is the river and the desert around it rather than the gaming floor.

The best day in Laughlin starts outside. Walk the Colorado River Heritage Greenway, follow the water toward Davis Dam, or drive west to Grapevine Canyon, where rock art marks the approach to Spirit Mountain. South of town, Big Bend of the Colorado gives the resort strip a quieter riverbank, with cottonwoods, beaches, and the cold clear water released from the dam upstream.

Laughlin is not worth a long detour if you only want nightlife; Las Vegas does that better. It does make sense on a lower Colorado River road trip, especially if you want a cheap base with easy walks, boat ramps, desert light, and one of southern Nevada's strongest petroglyph sites close by.
