Amboy

Mojave Desert Route 66 ghost town watched over by Amboy Crater and Roy's neon sign.

Amboy is barely a town now, and that is the point. It sits alone on old Route 66 in the Mojave Desert, bypassed by Interstate 40 and reduced to a few buildings, a post office, a runway, Roy's famous sign, and a black volcanic cone on the horizon.

This is not a normal sightseeing stop. Come if you are driving the old road, crossing the Mojave slowly, or want to see a classic American roadside place stripped down to its bones. Roy's Motel and Cafe gives Amboy its Route 66 image, while Amboy Crater gives it a real landscape anchor rather than just nostalgia.

Bring water, fuel, and a realistic sense of desert heat. The crater hike is best in cool weather or early morning, and the town itself is a brief but memorable stop.

Things to Do

Amboy has two real reasons to stop: the volcanic crater and the Route 66 roadside scene around Roy's. That is enough if you are already crossing the Mojave, but not enough to treat it like a conventional town.
