Bars and Cafes

Cafe Milano on Bancroft Way is the classic campus cafe. The original Peet's Coffee (2124 Vine Street, Gourmet Ghetto) is where American specialty coffee began — Alfred Peet opened it in 1966 and his approach trained the founders of Starbucks, among others. The cafe at BAMPFA (Berkeley Art Museum) is a good daytime stop downtown. Berkeley has enough student population to sustain a large number of good independent cafes; most of the best ones are within walking distance of the UC campus or along Shattuck Avenue.
