The Carlsbad Flower Fields

Each spring, from roughly late February through early May, 50 acres of hillside above Carlsbad turn into an enormous striped canvas of colour. The Tecolote Giant ranunculus flowers grow in bold horizontal bands — deep red, vivid orange, hot pink, and white — visible from the highway long before you reach the entrance. The timing and intensity of the bloom depend on winter rains and temperature, so no two years are quite identical.

Visitors walk a winding trail through the fields with views out over the Pacific and down toward Agua Hedionda Lagoon. The site also has a sweet-pea maze, historic farm equipment, and a working greenhouse where you can watch flowers at various stages of growth. The fields are a commercial operation — ticket entry is required — but the scale and colour make it worth the cost. Come on a weekday in early April for the best combination of bloom quality and manageable crowds.

A story
The ranunculus variety grown here — Tecolote Giant — was developed in the 1930s by Luther Gage, a local gardener working from a San Diego nursery. The Flower Fields only became a public attraction in the 1960s; before that, the blooms were purely a commercial cut-flower crop and most visitors only glimpsed them from the highway.
