The Catalyst is the main live music venue in Santa Cruz, a 600-capacity club at 1011 Pacific Avenue that has been hosting touring bands and local acts since 1966. The venue has a stage, a separate bar area, and reasonable acoustics for a club of its age. It is the closest thing Santa Cruz has to a proper music venue — the kind of place that books mid-level touring acts, regional bands, and occasional bigger names when they want a more intimate setting than the arenas in San Jose or San Francisco.
The calendar runs to most genres — rock, reggae, hip hop, electronic — and the cover prices are generally modest. There is a small street terrace for breaks between sets. Check the website calendar before arriving in town if live music is a priority; Santa Cruz doesn't have many alternatives at this capacity level.
