Santa Cruz's bar and cafe scene is shaped by the university and the surf culture that has defined the town since the 1970s. Pacific Avenue has most of the nightlife options. The coffee culture is strong — this is northern California, and roasting quality is taken seriously. Most bars are low-key by urban standards, and the town quiets down considerably outside of summer and the university calendar.
