Community United Methodist Church

1872 wooden gothic-revival church, the oldest Protestant church building on the San Mateo coast

The white wooden Methodist church on Johnston Street, a couple of blocks off Main, was completed in 1872 and is the oldest Protestant church building still in use on the San Mateo coast. It is a small but well-proportioned example of Carpenter Gothic — the simple New England gothic-revival style that travelled west with American settlers and pattern books in the mid-19th century. The steep gable, the lancet windows, and the slender bell tower are all typical of the form.

The church is still an active congregation, so the interior is generally only open during services. Even passing by on the way to or from Main Street is worthwhile: it is one of the few buildings in central Half Moon Bay that has changed very little since the town's farming-and-shipping days, when the schooner trade out of Pillar Point was the main link to San Francisco.
