Mavericks is famous for waves that can turn monstrous in winter, breaking offshore near Pillar Point and drawing some of the world's most serious big-wave surfers. You do not need to be a surfer to appreciate the setting: the bluffs, harbor mouth, and Pacific weather make this one of the most dramatic corners of the Half Moon Bay coast.
The adjacent Pillar Point Marsh adds a quieter reason to linger. Trails and viewpoints look across wetland, harbor, and open ocean, with birdlife in the reeds and surf pounding beyond the point. Conditions change fast, and the big waves are far offshore, so bring binoculars and stay well back from exposed rocks and cliff edges.
