Fountain-Tallman Museum

The Fountain-Tallman Museum occupies one of the most complete Gold Rush-era commercial buildings surviving in the California foothills. The stone and brick Soda Works building dates to the 1850s and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The museum inside is run by the El Dorado County Historical Society and focuses on the county's history from the Gold Rush through the 20th century.

The collection includes mining equipment, pioneer household items, photographs, and documents from the boom period when El Dorado County was producing gold by the ton and Placerville was a major supply hub for the northern mines. It's a small museum and doesn't take long to move through, but for anyone interested in the Gold Rush period it's more substantive than most roadside history stops.
