Triton Museum of Art

The Triton Museum of Art at 1505 Warburton Avenue is Santa Clara's main cultural institution — a contemporary art museum with a small but well-curated permanent collection and rotating exhibitions across media. Admission is free, which given the quality of the shows is a genuine bargain for the South Bay. The building is set in a pleasant sculpture garden and has good natural light throughout.

The permanent collection focuses on 19th and 20th-century American art with a California emphasis — landscapes, figurative work, and abstraction from artists who worked in the Bay Area and the Southwest. The rotating exhibitions tend toward contemporary work, including photography, ceramics, and mixed media. Worth an hour if you are near downtown Santa Clara.

A story
The museum is named after the Triton Collection, a gift from a local businessman. It has a permanent collection focused on 19th and 20th century American art, with particular strength in California artists — the collection is one of the better places to understand the West Coast art movements that ran parallel to but distinctly different from the New York scene.
