The Edgemar complex at 2437 Main Street was designed by Frank Gehry in 1988 and built on the site of a former dairy. The composition of fragmented volumes, chain-link fencing, corrugated metal, and Dutch-tilted towers was considered radical at the time — and expensive enough that it nearly derailed the project — but it represents an important early example of the deconstructivist architecture that would define Gehry's later career.
The complex houses retail and restaurant space rather than a cultural institution, which means it is accessible from the street without special admission. The architecture works at close range in ways that photographs do not entirely capture. Worth a look if you are already walking Main Street in the Ocean Park area.
