Cascade Theatre

The Cascade Theatre is Redding's performing arts venue and one of the city's most handsome buildings. The 1935 Art Deco structure on Market Street was restored and reopened in 2004 after years of closure, and it now hosts a steady programme of concerts, touring shows, films, and local performances. The interior is worth seeing for its own sake: the original ornamental plasterwork, decorative ceiling, and vintage neon exterior have been carefully preserved.

If you are in town for a few days, check what is playing — the programming is eclectic and often includes acts that would fill much larger venues in Sacramento or San Francisco. The theatre is on the main downtown street and walking distance from most of Redding's central restaurants.

A story
The Cascade opened in 1935 as a grand movie palace, part of the wave of Art Deco theatres built across the American West during the Depression. It fell into disrepair and faced demolition before a community campaign saved it; the restored interior, with its original ornamental plasterwork and neon marquee, is one of the better examples of the style in Northern California.
