When to Go

Redding has one of the hottest summers of any city in California — temperatures above 100°F (38°C) are routine in July and August, and 110°F days are not unheard of. If you are sensitive to heat, spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are far more pleasant, with clear skies and temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The hiking trails and lakes are most enjoyable in these shoulder seasons. Winters are mild by Sierra Nevada standards — snow in town is rare — but the mountain roads to Lassen and the higher elevations can be closed from November through April.
