Trinity Lake

A large reservoir about 15 miles north of Weaverville, created by Lewiston Dam on the Trinity River in 1960 and officially named Clair Engle Lake, though locals never use that name. The lake is one of the largest reservoirs in California by storage capacity and offers excellent bass and trout fishing, boating, and swimming. Several marinas rent kayaks, motorboats, and houseboats. The shoreline has a number of campgrounds managed by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, ranging from developed sites with hookups to primitive spots accessible only by boat. In a dry year the water level drops noticeably, but even then the setting — ringed by forested ridges with the Trinity Alps rising to the west — is spectacular.
