Strater Hotel

The Strater opened in 1887 and is one of the original Victorian hotels still operating in the American West. The red-brick four-storey building anchors the south end of Main Avenue with a corner bay window, wedding-cake brickwork, and a wraparound porch.

Step inside even if you are not staying — the lobby is full of Victorian furniture and period photographs, and the Diamond Belle Saloon downstairs has a ragtime piano going most afternoons. The hotel has hosted Theodore Roosevelt, Will Rogers and the writer Louis L'Amour, whose preferred suite is still marked on the doorframe.

A story
Louis L'Amour wrote many of his Western novels in Room 222 of the Strater, with the ragtime piano of the Diamond Belle Saloon downstairs leaking up through the floor. He claimed the noise was essential to the rhythm of the prose.
