Most of Durango's sights are walkable from Main Avenue downtown — a stretch of red-brick Victorian buildings that survived more or less intact from the 1880s railroad boom. The Animas River and the mountains around it are the other half of the picture: hiking, rafting and the famous narrow-gauge railroad are all minutes from the centre.
