The Basilica of St. Paul stands a few blocks west of the Halifax River, an unexpectedly grand brick church built in 1925-26 in a heavy Italianate Romanesque Revival style. The exterior is comparatively plain; the interior is its surprise — barrel-vaulted, with painted ceilings, an elaborate marble altar, and stained-glass windows brought from Munich.
It was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2006, the only basilica in central Florida. The church is usually open during daylight hours outside services, and mass is still said daily — it remains the cathedral parish for downtown Daytona's Catholic community.
