Jacksonville's position in northeast Florida puts several worthwhile destinations within easy driving distance. St. Augustine and Amelia Island are both under an hour away, while the Kennedy Space Center makes a full but rewarding day out.
St. Augustine — The oldest city in the United States is less than an hour south on I-95. The historic district is compact and walkable, centred on the Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century Spanish stone fort. The St. Augustine Lighthouse offers views from the top of its 219 steps. Allow a full day.
Amelia Island — About 45 minutes north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island has a different feel from the rest of Florida. The main town, Fernandina Beach, is lined with Victorian-era buildings, independent shops, and good restaurants. The island's beaches are uncrowded, and the surrounding waters are good for kayaking, fishing, and spotting dolphins and manatees.
Kennedy Space Center — Roughly two hours south, but worth the drive if space interests you at all. The Visitor Complex includes exhibits, IMAX screenings, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. A bus tour of the launch areas gives you close-up views of the pads — it is the highlight of the visit.
