Columbia Restaurant

A branch of the famous Tampa original — the oldest Spanish restaurant in Florida, founded in Ybor City in 1905 — the St. Augustine location serves the same Cuban-Spanish menu in a handsome building in the old city. The classics are here: the 1905 Salad tossed tableside with garlic, capers, and Worcestershire; Cuban black bean soup; palomilla steak; and the flaming Spanish coffee dessert. The cooking is old-fashioned in a good way, portions are generous, and the service is professional.

It's on the pricier side for St. Augustine, but quality and consistency are there. Reservations are worth making in high season. For a cheaper option in the old city, the Spanish Bakery on St. Francis Street serves an excellent empanada and caldo de pollo from a small courtyard kitchen that feels more authentically colonial than anything on St. George Street.
