Mar-a-Lago is the large Hispano-Moorish estate at the southern end of Palm Beach, built in the 1920s for Marjorie Merriweather Post and now operated as a private members' club and, from 2021, as the primary residence of Donald Trump. The exterior is visible from South Ocean Boulevard and from boats on the Intracoastal Waterway, but the interior is closed to non-members.
The building is worth noting as an example of the 1920s Palm Beach style at its most extravagant: 126 rooms, towers modelled on Portuguese and Spanish precedents, a ballroom with a gilded ceiling, and grounds that include a beach club, spa, and formal gardens. It was briefly owned by the US government — Merriweather Post donated it as a presidential winter retreat, but Nixon and Ford both declined to use it, and the government returned it. The property has been politically prominent since Trump's 2016 campaign and subsequent presidency, making it one of the most discussed private estates in America.
