Parque Amigos de José Martí

A small, fenced park on the corner of 8th Avenue and 13th Street, with a bronze statue of the Cuban poet and independence hero José Martí at its centre. Martí visited Ybor several times in the 1890s to raise money and recruits for the Cuban war of independence, giving speeches from a balcony on this site.

The park itself takes about ten minutes to see, but it is one of Ybor's more thought-provoking corners — and a reminder that the Cuban independence movement was largely financed and partly planned from the cigar factories a few streets away.

A story
The land is technically Cuban sovereign territory, deeded to the Republic of Cuba in 1956 by the boarding-house owner whose property it had been. Martí had stayed there during a fundraising trip in the 1890s.
