Apalachicola Historic District

The historic district covers most of downtown Apalachicola — roughly 900 buildings dating from the 1830s through the early 1900s, listed on the National Register since 1980. The streets run on the original 1836 grid, with avenues lettered A through M running parallel to the river and numbered streets crossing them.

The best walking tour starts at the Riverfront Park, heads inland along Market Street past the David G. Raney House (1838), and loops back via Avenue D past Gorrie Square and the church. Most buildings are private homes and not open to visitors, but the architectural mix — Greek Revival mansions, Cracker cottages, brick warehouses converted to galleries and restaurants — is exceptional for a Gulf town this size. Allow at least an hour to walk.
